Kate credits her hometown newspaper for her first break as a photographer. Before leaving home on Cape Cod to pursue her Art History degree at Boston University, she was hired by the local paper to capture on film the myriad happenings of small town life. Between shooting the strawberry festival and the blue ribbon prizes at the county fair, Kate found some of her favorite subjects; spotting from the road the cranberry harvesters waist deep in their crimson sea, a solitary oysterman bent to task in the waters off Wellfleet… Documenting the land and labor at the source of food has become one of her favorite pursuits. She believes that an image of freshly shucked oysters is that much richer if one understands its origin and the hand that harvested it. Kate’s inquisitive approach to her subject is rooted in these early days.
